University Reduces Costs By $250,000 by Installing New Smoke Alarms 

Challenge:

A university maintenance department was looking to update their smoke and CO alarms, as they had not been updated for 9 years. In addition, the old alarms became costly and time consuming to maintain; the maintenance staff was replacing 9V batteries every 6 months, at a cost of $2 per battery, with a cost of $5 in labor, per alarm and detector.

Solution:

Based on the university’s needs, LineDrive recommended Kidde 10-year alarms, with specific options that would allow for the appropriate solutions to be installed throughout the university.  These solutions included a battery only option as well as a hardwired option.  The alarms and detectors from Kidde resulted in time savings, cost reduction, labor efficiency, reduction of liability concerns, and the elimination of frequently annoying low battery chimes.

Over the course of the 10-year life of the alarms, LineDrive will have helped the university save over $250,000 in battery and labor costs.   Environmentally, we are significantly reducing the amount of batteries being sent to landfills each year. 

Battery Operated Alarms - 738 alarms purchased at $40 per alarm. Standard alarm is $25 per alarm. 2 batteries at $2 per year plus $10 in labor. Total cost savings $100,000.*

 

Hardwired Alarms - 1300 alarms purchased at $50 per alarm. Standard alarm is $34 per alarm. 2 batteries at $2 per year plus $10 in labor. Total cost savings $150,000 *
